Q:
I am told the Trakm8 SWIFT unit uses GPS, what is GPS?
A:
The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite-based navigation system made up of a network of 24 satellites placed into orbit by the U.S. Department of Defence. GPS was originally intended for military applications, but in the 1980s, the government made the system available for civilian use. GPS works in any weather conditions, anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day

Q:
What are the limitations with GPS?
A:
GPS works well under a wide variety of conditions, but there are a few situations that often cause problems.
??????? Urban Canyons - It's common to lose reception as you drive through "urban canyons" with tall buildings on both sides. Tall buildings aren't usually a problem if they're free-standing, but it's hard to find GPS signals when they're built closely together along the edge of a narrow street.
??????? Garage Parking ????? If you park in a garage overnight, the Trakm8 SWIFT unit will lose the GPS fix and will not be able to determine its position on the earth. When you leave the garage it will take a number of minutes to get the GPS fix back, and while the unit is doing this the Trakm8 SWIFT unit will not be able to log the position during your journey.
??????? Tunnels - Tunnels also block GPS signals but are less of a problem because you will be able to regain a signal quickly once you are through.
??????? Number of satellites visible ????? The more satellites the Trakm8 SWIFT GPS receiver can "see," the better the accuracy. Buildings, terrain, electronic interference, or sometimes even dense foliage can block signal reception, causing position errors or possibly no position reading at all. GPS units typically will not work indoors, underwater or underground.

Q: What is Triangulation?
A:
Triangulation - is a process by which the location of the Trakm8 SWIFT unit can be determined by measuring either the distance, or the direction, of the received signal from two or three different satellites. In theory, three satellites would normally provide an unambiguous three-dimensional fix, but in practice at least four are used to offset any inaccuracies

Q:

Why are there gaps in my Live Route Replay or in my reports?

A:
This may be because of coverage/GPS issues (see above), or through user issues e.g. jamming/signal blocking.

Q:
My car seems to be ?????wandering????? in the reports, why is that?
A:
If the unit has only a partial GPS fix the journey may only be recorded with an accuracy of 10 metres.
